Moving out of your parents' house: a fright and a fantasy!

Today let’s talk about the fright for some and the fantasy for many, moving out.

Think back to when you were a kid and felt like the most misunderstood little being in the whole wide world. Think of how badly you wanted to have your own house one day where you could be your own boss and go to bed whenever you wanted and paint the room however you wanted and have sweets for breakfast and I’ve kind of lost track of where I was going with the reminiscing…

The fantasy part

Having your own space where you decide the vibe, where you come back at the end of the day to take off your armour and be yourself is a wonderful thing. The place you own becomes an extension of you, a reflection of who you are projected on a tiny little space where every object says something about you. It doesn’t even have to be fancy, it just has to be yours.

The fright part

At the same time however, it means that every corner of that space is your responsibility. Every maintenance for every problem must come from you and no one else. You realize that the same place where you could take your armour off can sometimes also feel like collateral damage from a war you weren’t sure you wanted to fight so soon. Any sort of disruption in your space means that you’re not doing well in life. Cooking, cleaning, bills, loneliness, become too real too quickly.

What should I do?

I’m here to tell you that the key is to not give up. To not let that sinking feeling get you down and to hold on to the fact that all important steps in life are scary. It might get hard, but it still means that you’re in control of your life.

While it is a huge change to suddenly be responsible for everything, all you have to do is build the right habits. You will soon be at ease with the multi-tasking and prioritizing. And before you know it, you’ll feel like the boss you always wanted to be and you may even allow yourself to have some sweets for breakfast once in a while (see there was a point!).

This will be a gradual process though and takes some mindful practice which we’ve talked about in detail before. You can give this blog a read to see how to change your life with one new habit. Thank me later.

That’s it for today folks.

Much love,

Jen.
