5 Hacks to Get Rid of a Smelly Washing Machine

You open the door to your mighty life-saving robot called the washing machine and you’re taken aback (quite literally) by the pungent sewage-like odor that it is radiating and that’s when you know that your day is officially off to a bad start.
Washing machines can have that funky odor due to multiple reasons including lint buildup, mold and mildew, and hair getting trapped in the gasket. We have come up with 5 easy hacks to help get rid of pesky smells of Smelly Washing Machine. Read along!
1- Lint trap is the culprit:
The first hack is to clean the source which mostly tends to be the lint trap. After unplugging the washing machine,
simply remove the lint filter and clean the excess lint out with the help of a vacuum.
2- Clean the tub and door seal:
Spray a mixture of white vinegar and water inside the drum and wipe using a microfibre cloth. Use the same mixture to clean the grates under the drum using a toothbrush.
Wipe the rubber gaskets also known as door seals and soak the detergent dispenser using soap and warm water.
3- Sit back and self-clean:
Most machines have a built-in self-clean option. Throw in one or two cleaning tablets, sit back and enjoy.
An alternative to tablets is to pour a mixture of 1/4th cup of baking soda and 1/4th cup of water in the soap dispenser, along with two cups of vinegar in the drum, and run a quick hot wash.
4- One for the front loaders:
Stagnant water and grime can collect in a compartment located at the base of a front loader washing machine which can create a strong unpleasant smell.
The manual of the washing machine informs on how to drain the stagnant water.
5- Prevention before cure:
To prevent these smells;
use warm instead of cold water for washing.
switch to eco-friendly and low-sudsing detergent.
leave the door open after every wash
Lastly, throw in some coffee grinds periodically to absorb all the pesty smells. Happy Washing!
